Are Educational Games Beneficial?

By Jacqueline Isadore

Math and science can be tedious subjects for a large number of kids and teenagers. Modern technology has allowed the development games that can actually make these subjects fun for students. The games are entertaining because they transform tedious subjects into games that students will actually enjoy learning. As a result, students will actually find the learning process fun. Many enjoy these games so much that they will play them in their spare time. Companies have recognized this and have built various online games.

Capital One and Junior Achievement just announced the launching of a new website that features a game that teaches kids how to manage money and gives them the ability to role play different careers and jobs. This game is based on a Junior Achievement program called “JA Finance Park Virtual” and designed for kids in junior high and high school.

Every player takes on an identity with a name, family, budget, goals and a career to maintain. The game also teaches kids about financial responsibility and financial literacy. These are important skill that even many adults lack; many do not know how to set up a budget and manage money properly. This shows kids what it’s like in the real world and teaches them real life skills. These are skills that a student will need in order to be successful later on in life.

Junior Achievement and Capital One commissioned Brain Research to conduct a survey in order to show that educational games can be useful and even bring the entire family together. Results show that more than half of teens actually play video games with their parents at least once every thirty days. This means that the parents can also play along these educational games with their kids. Some students even spend over two hours a day playing games!

Some games even hone mathematical and reading skills for students. As we all know, math can be tedious and difficult for lots of young folks. If a game can make math actually more fun then it’s definitely a useful tool. The website was launched during the same week that Capital One and Junior Achievement’s site was started. Fun Brain manages the site. The firm has been developing educational online videos since around ten years ago.

Academic Skill Builders is another website that is trying to make learning fun. They cover math topics such as geometry and elementary bath, reading, vocabulary and logical and analytical reasoning skills. The site also includes testimonials from educators who encourage their students to visit the site and play the games.

Games are a useful and effiicient tool that can be used to encourage and motivate students to seek knowledge. Any tool that can make the learning process more attractive and enjoyable should be taken seriously. If you are interested in learning more about educational games just do a search for “educational games” in your search engine. There are plenty of sites that provide access to fun games you can learn from!
